Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser Stories

Their Mistress, The Sea

Published: 1968

Following Lean Times in Lankhmar, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser flee Lankhmar to avoid the aftermath of Issek of the Jug’s second coming. In the process, they also abandon their first attempt at retiring from the adventuring life and settling down to normal professions–normal at least by Lankhmar standards.

They take to the sea accompanied by Oorph the Mingol and slowly work themselves back into adventuring shape. They have some pirating misadventures, one of which only a most qualified success, and after some time of misfortune they eventually settle down into the rhythm of the sea…

But chiefly they talked of their mistress, the sea, whose curving motions they loved again, and to whose moods they now felt preternaturally attuned, particularly in darkness. They spoke of her rages and caressings, her coolths and unending dancings, sometimes lightly footing a minuet, sometimes furiously a-stamp, and her infinitude of secret parts.
