The Bleak Shore

Nehwon Gazetteer | Stories of Lankhmar

Published: 1940

WharfThe Bleak Shore, the Bleak Shore, the Bleak Shore. After hearing those words three times, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are summoned under a geas across the vast Outer Sea to meet their deaths upon the Bleak Shore.

Much of the tale is told by Ourph the Mingol who we first meet in this story. He relates to the dockmen of Lankhmar how he and three other fellow mingols sailed across the Outer Sea as slaves of the twain. He recounts them as madmen, singularly focused on sailing west. Cursed but protected by a dark demon keeping them alive for a purpose known to only it.

The mingols are released from servitude and are told to sail home. Ourph is the only one to survive the trip back to the Land of Lankhmar. As the mingols leave, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser mount the rocky cliff to meet their fate on the Bleak Shore.
