Witch Girls Adventures aims to charm pre-teen girls into role-playing games.   Designed with its audience in mind from the bottom up, it just may succeed.  There is even a comic book, and the art of both is perfect for its core audience.

A friend and I had the privilege of playing in a Witch Girls Adventures demo ran by Malcolm Harris at OwlCon 2008.  We were there trying to recruit GMs for our own local con, that’s why we ended up playing in a game targeted at pre-teen girls.  That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Malcolm ran a great game and we all had fun.  At one point in the game a van pulls over to the curb and witch-hunters jump out to attack our witches.  I have my character pretend to run away in panic only to run around the van and shape-change into a police officer and confront the villians in an attempt to scare them off.

Malcolm and his magic system handled this without missing a beat.  Throughout the game we would tell Malcolm what we wanted to do with our magic and Malcolm was able to address every situation without us having to be familiar with the magic system.

Designing a game to get more girls into the hobby is a good idea indeed.  Best of luck to them!

A review of the game can be found at The Other Side.
