Augury Ink
The inner sleeve of King Crimson’s Starless and Bible Black brought about this idea.
Bottle of Augury Ink
Open a book to a random page or lay down a letter upon a table. Preferably some writing about the subject that you wish to divine about. Light a candle and let the wax drip over the page. Move the candle in a circle while you ask your question. Set the candle down then unstopper the bottle. Pour a drop of the ink onto the center of the page, then wait as the ink spreads. The voids in the ink will reveal the answer to your question.
This item could be used in any campaign. In a modern occult or Lovecraftian campaign it could be particularly spooky. Obviously, the GM should make the answer as cryptic as possible.
Technically, augury was the practice of interpreting the will of the gods by observing the flight of birds, but then again necromancy was a form a divination by speaking to the dead and not the act of creating undead — so there you go.
